These come in dough-nut shaped loop which is specifically designed to prevent passage of liquid or gases through two mating surfaces. O Rings sit in middle of a groove when they are at rest but when pressure is applied, they move toward low-pressure side of groove and sealing pressure is transmitted to surface to be sealed.
